A Wounded Name

Ophelia is a difficult role to play because her character, like Gertrude ‘s, is murky. In the case of an ingenue like Ophelia, a very young and lovely woman, Shakespeare would have been writing for a boy. The extent to which a boy could grasp subtle nuances might have prevented the playwright from fleshing out the character more fully. We do know that Ophelia is torn between two contradictory poles. Her heart has convinced her that Hamlet loved her, though he swears he never did. To her father and brother, Ophelia is the eternal virgin, the vessel of morality whose purpose is to be a dutiful wife and steadfast mother. To Hamlet, she is a sexual object, a corrupt and deceitful lover.

Ophelia also often describes past events in flashbacks, but I will only describe the immediate plot.

Ophelia is a senior in high school and is dating Prince Hamlet, who is a sophomore in college. She lives at the castle because her father, Polonius, is an advisor to the king. Hamlet does not react well to the engagement and refuses to come to the wedding. Hamlet does come to the reception but acts flippantly. Ophelia watches him sulk around for a long time, mostly hanging out at her family apartment, and he claims he sees the ghost of his father. However, Horatio tells Ophelia that he only gets worse never leaving his room, etc , so eventually Ophelia goes to his college.

She and Horatio take him out for a fun night at a party, where embarrassing photos of Ophelia are taken and plastered all over the news. She is berated by her father and the royal couple for this. She promises to stay away from Hamlet, and when he comes back to the castle again, he is angry at her for making such a promise.

The character of Ophelia has fascinated directors, actresses, writers and painters since she first appeared on stage. Here Elaine Showalter discusses Ophelia’s madness as a particularly female malady, showing how from Shakespeare’s day to our own Ophelia has been used both to reflect and to challenge evolving ideas about female psychology and sexuality. Over the past years, she has moved from the margins to the centre of post-Shakespearean discourse, increasingly becoming a female counterpart to Hamlet as a portrait of conflict and stress.

So I don’t know if you heard, but this past summer, Disney went and made another Lion King. I mean, the original movie came out 25 years ago and it’s still regularly voted the most popular Disney flick in the U. The musical has been on Broadway for 22 years with no sign of closing. Even with mixed reviews, the remake made a truly sickening amount of money.

Simba’s story has a far less tragic ending, of course, and Nala is a tad more proactive than Ophelia, but the story still follows the plot of Shakespeare’s existential tragedy, right down to the whole thing where Simba’s ghost dad has to remind his procrastinating son to murder his evil uncle and take back the kingdom. It’s Hamlet! And the fact that Hamlet- but-with-lions is such an enduring classic is a testament to both the universality of Shakespeare’s work and Disney’s ability to Disney-fy anything.

If 25 years of Lion King just isn’t enough, here are a few more modern stories based on Hamlet although they might not contain quite so many lions :. Look, Shakespeare has lots of interesting, well-rounded, fully-realized female characters. Ophelia is not one of them. Because Hamlet is about Hamlet, and Hamlet is a grade A douche who doesn’t treat his girlfriend all that well, poor Ophelia doesn’t really get a chance to tell her side of the story in the original play.

Lisa M. Klein’s Ophelia beautifully retells the story from Ophelia’s perspective: she’s a witty, rowdy, mother-less girl growing up and falling in love in the midst of the dark, unfolding drama of Elsinore castle.
